May de Lencquesaing has always contributed positively to every community she was associated with. For the small community of 14 farm workers she found at Glenelly, 8 households in total, this was certainly no different. Not only was she responsible for successfully reallocating each family into a house that they now own, situated in the beautiful Idas Valley, but she also managed to sponsor their children to attend the schools in the local area. Her passion and belief for investing in their future, especially their education, lead her to recently contribute generously to this cause by erecting the Glenelly Care Centre for the farm children and the Glenelly Recreation Centre for the farm workers in January 2010.
A caretaker was appointed, assisted by a full time social worker, to watch the farm children currently attending school. In this safe environment, with which they are all familiar, they receive a balanced meal after school before it is time for doing homework. A small library, a laptop and sponsored internet facilities are at their disposal to simplify previous challenges such as doing research for school tasks and other educational requirements.
For the parents, knowing the safety of their children is assured while they are working on the farm is priceless. The Glenelly Recreation Centre will focus on the Social Development and Personal Upliftment of the farm workers. Improving their reading and writing skills will be one of the programs available in Afrikaans and English, the two languages spoken at the Estate. Other programs will include and focus on skills, computer knowledge and recreation development to enhance their day-to-day standard of living.
